Trump says US has ‘permanent control’ over Greenland security

Washington DC: US President Donald Trump announced that he has struck a landmark deal with Denmark to grant Washington permanent security control over Greenland, a move designed to bar Russia and China from setting up military bases in the strategic Arctic territory.

Since returning to the White House, Trump has repeatedly insisted on the necessity of controlling Greenland for strategic reasons, causing initial friction with NATO ally Denmark.

However, the new framework successfully balances security demands with local interests.

Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen and Greenlandic Prime Minister Jens-Frederik Nielsen both welcomed the pact, confirming that it strengthens territorial defense while fully recognizing the kingdom's sovereignty and the Greenlandic people's right to self-determination.

The formal agreement is scheduled to be signed next week on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly in New York. 

Under its terms, no adversary can establish a military presence or make sensitive investments without express written approval.

Washington also announced plans to immediately expand its military footprint on the island, building upon existing defense pacts to secure supremacy in the rapidly warming Arctic region.
