A drug smuggler, arrested with 101 capsules of heroin in his stomach, had his life imprisonment upheld.

The 41-year-old Pakistani national was nabbed at the Bahrain International Airport after a customs official grew suspicious of the suspect’s behaviour upon reaching the inspection area.

The convict initially escaped a manual inspection by the official, but he was later arrested after being subjected to X-ray at a hospital.

He admitted to swallowing the capsules but claimed he knew nothing about their contents.

Appearing before the Public Prosecution, he said a compatriot asked him to deliver the capsules to a person who would be waiting for him at the airport in Bahrain.

He said the man promised him a job in Bahrain once he successfully smuggles the capsules.

The accused was also fined BD5000 by judges at the High Criminal Court.  He would spend up to 25 years behind bars before being deported.
