The Fifth Lower Criminal Court has sentenced a man to six months in prison and fined him BD37,856 after he attempted to smuggle prohibited tambak into Bahrain through the Kingdom’s seaport.
rn
The court also ordered his permanent deportation from Bahrain and the confiscation of the seized items.
rn
According to the Financial Crimes and Money Laundering Prosecution, the case began after Customs Affairs officers at the seaport suspected a shipment and carried out an inspection.
rn
The inspection uncovered 2,912 kilograms of prohibited tambak, valued at BD37,856. The material had been concealed using a sophisticated method inside ready-mix concrete.
rn
The seized material was confiscated and the necessary legal procedures were taken before the case was referred to the specialised prosecution unit.
rn
During its investigation, the unit heard the statement of the customs officer, examined the seized items and assigned specialists to test the material. Expert reports confirmed that the shipment contained prohibited tambak.
rn
The prosecution also questioned the customs clearance agent and several witnesses.
rn
Investigations established that the defendant, who owned the commercial registration, had ordered the shipment and submitted false documents to Customs Affairs in an attempt to circumvent Bahrain’s restrictions on importing the prohibited material.
rn
The prosecution subsequently issued an order for his arrest and referral to the competent criminal court, which issued the sentence.
