Al-Shamlan: Bahraini Coaches Need More Trust and Time
National coach Mohammed Al-Shamlan criticised the treatment of local football managers, saying Bahraini coaches are often brought in during crises but are not given enough time or support to succeed.
Al-Shamlan said Bahraini coaches have the ability to lead the national team but are rarely given the same level of trust and working conditions afforded to foreign coaches.
He also pointed to the challenges facing local managers, noting that many coaches have to work other jobs alongside football, limiting the time available for training, studying and professional development.
“The evaluators in football are less competent than those working in football,” Al-Shamlan said.
He also criticised clubs and the sports media for placing coaches under intense pressure, with poor results often overshadowing previous achievements.
Al-Shamlan said clubs should first establish a clear football philosophy and then appoint coaches who fit that approach, rather than repeatedly changing managers based on short-term results.
The coach, who has worked with Muharraq, Al Khaldiya and Riffa, said he does not hold a grudge against clubs that dismissed him.
“To become a coach, you must be dismissed three times to learn,” he said, adding that he sees dismissal as part of a professional career.
Al-Shamlan called for Bahraini coaches to be judged on their long-term work and given the time and support needed to build successful teams.
