Bahrain reaffirmed its commitment to sustainable and inclusive urban development during the United Nations High-Level Meeting on the Midterm Review of the Implementation of the New Urban Agenda, held at the UN Headquarters in New York.
Housing and Urban Planning Minister Amna bint Ahmed Al Rumaihi led Bahrain's delegation to the meeting, which brought together ministers, senior officials and representatives from UN member states to review progress made since the New Urban Agenda was adopted in 2016 and discuss ways to accelerate its implementation in support of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) by 2030.
Addressing the meeting on behalf of Bahrain, Al Rumaihi said the Kingdom considers the New Urban Agenda a practical framework for strengthening national policies, improving quality of life and developing more sustainable, inclusive and resilient cities, in line with Sustainable Development Goal 11.
She said Bahrain translated the principles of the New Urban Agenda into integrated national policies and programmes, guided by the directives of His Majesty King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa to place people at the centre of development and make quality of life a key objective of national planning.
The minister also highlighted the government's efforts, led by His Royal Highness Prince Salman bin Hamad Al Khalifa, the Crown Prince and Prime Minister, to accelerate housing and urban development projects, including the national programme to deliver 50,000 housing units.
She said the initiative helped create integrated urban communities that combine housing, essential services and economic opportunities while advancing the goals of the New Urban Agenda.
