Calls for stronger water security cooperation at UN conference
The fourth High-Level International Conference on the International Decade for Action “Water for Sustainable Development 2018–2028” is being organised by the government of Tajikistan in cooperation with the United Nations from May 25 to 28. The gathering brought together heads of state, ministers and representatives of international and regional organisations focused on water security and sustainable development.
Speaking during a ministerial session, Mr Humaidan said Bahrain remains committed to supporting international efforts aimed at strengthening water security and promoting the sustainable management of water resources.
He said the kingdom’s approach reflects the leadership of King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa and the directives of Salman bin Hamad Al Khalifa, stressing the importance of international cooperation in tackling growing challenges linked to water scarcity and climate change.
The minister described water security as a national priority and a central pillar of Bahrain’s sustainable development plans. He also highlighted the need to strengthen the resilience and readiness of critical infrastructure.
Mr Humaidan referred to efforts undertaken by Bahrain to maintain the operational efficiency of its water production, transmission and distribution systems after one of the kingdom’s main desalination plants suffered physical damage during what he described as Iranian attacks targeting critical infrastructure in Bahrain, Gulf Cooperation Council countries and Jordan.
He stressed the importance of enhancing the protection of water infrastructure and ensuring its preparedness against continuing risks and threats to guarantee uninterrupted water supplies and essential services.
The minister also called for an integrated approach to water security through diversifying water and energy sources, expanding water recycling projects, replenishing groundwater reserves and establishing strategic water storage systems to improve countries’ ability to adapt to future challenges.
