‘Protect our kids too’: EU calls on Meta after U.S. deal

Brussels: The European Union has pushed Meta to apply the child-safety restrictions included in its recent US settlement to minors in Europe as well. According to EU officials, teenage users across the bloc should receive equal protection from possible dangers associated with social media use.
The US settlement compels Meta to increase child protection precautions, such as measures to prevent excessive use, improve age verification, and give parents more control over their children's accounts. The agreement comes after years of claims that Meta's platforms can lead to addictive behaviour and negatively impact young people.
The EU's call puts further pressure on Meta to provide tighter security globally rather than only for users in the United States. Meta has denied wrongdoing while agreeing to the settlement, which could cost the company up to $18 billion.
