If plans proceed as expected, the Arad Fort walkway may soon take on a livelier character, with kiosks offering madein-Bahrain goods adding colour and activity to the seafront.
The proposal has already cleared an important step, having been passed by a majority vote of the Muharraq Municipal Council’s Services and Facilities Committee, and will now move to the full council for further discussion and a final decision.
As you might have guessed, these kiosks are set to be run by productive families.
They will bring with them a range of handcrafted items, offering visitors something distinctly local in what is already a high-traffic public space.
If realised, the initiative could shape up as a win-win — opening new doors for small, family-run businesses while giving visitors to one of Muharraq’s most popular coastal destinations a richer, more authentic experience.
At its core, the plan seeks to organise retail spaces that allow locally made goods to be sold directly to the public.
Ahmed Mohammed Al Maqahwi, who tabled the proposal, said the idea is to support smallscale enterprises while also enhancing visitor engagement along the waterfront.
Committee members, clearly encouraged by the possibilities, voiced strong support for the project. They noted that such an initiative would strengthen the role of productive families in the local economy, offering them greater visibility and easier access to customers seeking Bahrain-made products.
It would also, they added, inject fresh vibrancy into the walkway.
Beyond that, the project aims to expand the range of services available at the site, forming part of broader efforts to enhance tourism and further develop public spaces across Muharraq.
