Families of children with autism in Bahrain face growing pressure due to limited support, rising costs, and delays in accessing care.

MP Mariam Saleh Al Dhaen called for a unified national strategy to address the issue, warning that current efforts remain fragmented. “The issue can no longer be handled through partial measures,” she said, stressing the need for a system that connects healthcare, education, rehabilitation, and employment.

Rising Burden

Families often face long waiting times for early diagnosis, followed by a confusing, uncoordinated system. Many turn to private services, which increases financial strain. “Costs quickly build, placing both financial and emotional pressure on families,” she noted.

Dr. Al Dhaen emphasised that parents must be supported and trained as part of the care system, and public and non-profit services should be expanded.

She urged stronger coordination across ministries to create a clear pathway from early diagnosis to education, inclusion, and employment.
