“Pet first aid isn’t just a nice-to-know; it’s a true life-saver,” says Husnia Karimi, who holds a Recover CPR–BLS certification from the American College of Veterinary Emergency & Critical Care (ACVECC). “In an emergency, every second counts, and knowing how to act quickly can make all the difference.”
“Pet CPR begins with checking responsiveness and ensuring the airway is clear,” she explains. “If your pet is unresponsive, lay them on their right side and begin chest compressions using both hands for larger dogs or one hand for smaller pets at a steady rhythm of 100 to 120 compressions per minute. After every 30 compressions, give two rescue breaths by gently blowing into the nose until the chest rises.”
Emergencies
On choking emergencies, Husnia notes: “Watch for signs such as gagging, pawing at the mouth, or blue gums. If an object is visible and easily reachable, remove it carefully. Otherwise, perform the Heimlich maneuver by applying firm upward thrusts just below the ribcage. Once the obstruction is cleared, check breathing and be ready to start CPR if necessary.”
She stresses the importance of hands-on training: “It’s not just about knowing the steps; it’s about being prepared to act confidently. Practical sessions help you practice CPR, handle choking incidents, and manage common emergencies. With the right training, you not only learn the theory, but also build the muscle memory to respond swiftly. That awareness and preparedness can truly save a life.”
