Bahraini halwa exceeds 1,000 kilograms ahead of Eid, as no Bahraini table is complete without it. “The day before Eid and its night are always the busiest, with working hours reaching up to 18 hours to meet the demand,” Mohamed Al Kounizi told The Daily Tribune, speaking on behalf of Husain Showaiter Sweets.

More than just a dessert, halwa represents hospitality, culture, and celebration, deeply rooted in Bahrain’s heritage. The story of Husain Showaiter Sweets reflects this long tradition. The family’s beginnings date back to 1985, while the craft itself goes back to the 1950s, when halwa was prepared at home and sold during special occasions. In 1964, the first specialized halwa factory opened in Zaraneeq, Muharraq, alongside a shop in Muharraq Souq.

Preparations for Eid begin weeks in advance, with pre-orders opening several days before the holiday. “That’s when demand peaks and all teams operate at full capacity,” Al Kounizi explained. Despite the pressure, quality remains a top priority. “No matter how busy we get, we never compromise on quality. People trust us to deliver the same taste every year.”

He also shared the best way to enjoy halwa at home: “For the best experience, gently heat it before serving either by placing the container in hot water or microwaving a portion for a few seconds. It enhances the texture and flavor.”

Historically, halwa was consumed by pearl divers during long months at sea due to its long shelf life. Over time, it became a staple of Bahraini hospitality and a key feature of Eid gatherings. “It’s part of our identity and our traditions,” Al Kounizi added.

Even amid the rush, memorable moments stand out. He recalled one incident: “A couple once came to buy sweets for their family and ended up arguing over the amount. We stepped in and offered part of their order as a gift to keep the Eid spirit alive.”

For the team behind the scenes, the reward goes beyond meeting demand. “We feel proud to be part of people’s happiness during Eid,” he said. “Our halwa is present in homes across Bahrain, and that means everything to us.”

As families gather and celebrate, Bahraini halwa remains at the heart of every table bringing with it the sweetness of tradition and the spirit of Eid.
