The United Nations Security Council today adopted a Bahrain-led resolution condemning Iranian attacks on Gulf states, while a Russian-led draft failed to secure enough votes.

The Bahrain-led resolution, co-sponsored by 135 UN member states and backed by the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) and Jordan, passed with 13 votes in favor and two abstentions from China and Russia. It strongly condemns Iran’s “egregious attacks” against Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, UAE, and Jordan, labeling the assaults a breach of international law and a serious threat to global peace and security. The resolution also calls for an immediate cessation of all attacks.

Jamal Fares Alrowaiei, Bahrain’s Permanent Representative to the UN, said, “The message is clear: the international community is resolute in rejecting these Iranian, unjust hostile attacks that are targeting sovereign countries and threatening regional stability, particularly in a region of strategic importance for the global economy, energy security, and trade.”

China’s UN representative, Fu Cong, emphasized that the conflict “has neither legitimacy nor legal basis” and urged the US and Israel to cease military operations while respecting the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Gulf Arab states.

US Permanent Representative Michael Waltz said, “President Trump and his team exhausted every attempt at diplomatic negotiations. Iran has repeatedly crossed red lines, seeking more missiles, drones, and a path to nuclear escalation, leaving the world to face the consequences.”

Iranian UN representative Amir-Saeid Iravani rejected the resolution, calling it “a manifest injustice” and asserting that Iran is the victim of the current crisis. He added that Iranian defense operations targeting US military facilities do not threaten regional sovereignty and blamed Israel for drawing the US into the conflict.

The Russian-led draft resolution, which called for all parties to immediately stop military activity without naming any aggressor, failed with only four votes in favor, two against, and nine abstentions. Russian Ambassador Vasily Nebenzya criticized the draft as “unbalanced” and claimed proposed amendments were ignored.

Speaking to the media, Jamal Fares Alrowaiei highlighted the defensive capabilities of Gulf forces: “All our Air Force and Air Defense, due to their high readiness, have successfully intercepted more than 954 Iranian missiles, over 2,500 drones, and 17 aircraft since 28 February. The targets of these attacks were civilian infrastructures including residential areas, food distribution centers, airports, ports, and energy installations.”

Representatives from Qatar, Saudi Arabia, and Kuwait reaffirmed their condemnation of Iranian attacks, emphasizing their right to self-defense under Article 51 of the UN Charter and rejecting misleading claims that Kuwaiti territory was used against Iran.
