The Permanent Mission of the Kingdom of Bahrain to the United Nations in New York, acting on behalf of the member states of the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC), has sent a letter to António Guterres, Secretary-General of the United Nations.
The move comes in Bahrain’s capacity as chair of the current 46th session of the GCC, with the aim of urgently drawing attention to the malicious Iranian missile attacks that targeted a number of countries in the region.
The letter conveyed the GCC states’ strongest condemnation and denunciation of the blatant Iranian attack that targeted GCC member states and the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan, describing it as a flagrant violation of national sovereignty and a clear breach of the principles of international law and the Charter of the United Nations.
Solidarity
The GCC countries affirmed their full solidarity with, and support for, the states affected by these attacks, stressing that the security of nations is indivisible and that any infringement on the sovereignty of any member constitutes a threat to the security and stability of the region as a whole.
The Council also warned of the grave consequences of the continuation of this unacceptable escalation.
The letter further underscored that the GCC states have the full and inherent right to self defence in accordance with Article 51 of the United Nations Charter, in response to this blatant targeting, in a manner proportionate to the nature of the aggression and consistent with international law
