Plans to extend the use of treated sewage effluent in Sitra have moved forward within the framework of the Kingdom’s national sewerage strategy, as authorities outlined technical details aimed at supporting irrigation and landscaping projects across the area.

According to information presented, a main transmission line already runs from the North Sitra Sewage Treatment Plant, extending through Salman Ahmed Al Fateh Road and Shaikh Jaber Al Ahmed Al Sabah Road. The network connects to a principal storage reservoir with a capacity of 3,000 cubic metres, forming the backbone of the reclaimed water system serving parts of the island.

Integration

Officials indicated that distribution lines are in place within the East Sitra Housing Project, with ongoing hydraulic studies assessing the feasibility of expanding coverage to additional greening zones and public spaces. The expansion forms part of the broader update to the national sewerage master plan, which seeks to optimise the reuse of treated wastewater for non potable purposes.

The approach aligns with Bahrain’s sustainability objectives, reducing reliance on freshwater resources while supporting environmental landscaping and urban greening efforts.

Next Phase

Authorities noted that, subject to final technical assessments, the project may proceed to tender stage under the established regulatory and planning framework. The initiative reflects a shift towards resource efficiency, positioning treated wastewater as a strategic asset in urban development and environmental management across Sitra.
