Priority
The Southern Municipal Council has announced that it will convene an extraordinary session on Monday dedicated to addressing the waste bag distribution issue, following growing concerns raised by council members over delays and disruption to a core municipal service. Members stressed that the problem cannot be left without resolution and requires urgent intervention.
Concerns
During the council’s eleventh meeting of the fourth legislative term, municipal member Mohammed Hussain Darraj highlighted persistent complaints regarding slow processing of services and overlapping responsibilities between several authorities involved in waste management. He stressed that citizens are often left without clear answers, with requests being rejected or delayed due to uncertainty over jurisdiction, adding to public frustration.
Oversight
Municipal member Ali Al Shaikh focused on the need for clearer coordination and stronger on-site supervision, noting that gaps in follow-up and implementation have contributed to recurring operational issues. He emphasised that proper oversight and technical coordination are essential to ensuring continuity of services and preventing avoidable disruptions.
Accountability
Meanwhile, municipal member Hamad Ali Al Zeabi raised concerns over delays in official responses, administrative shortcomings and the absence of decisive solutions. He underlined that waste bag distribution is a daily necessity for residents and warned that repeated postponements risk eroding public trust in municipal performance.
Finance
Council members also questioned the management of budgets allocated for waste bags, the status of contracts with cleaning companies and delays in approving agreements exceeding financial thresholds. They noted that shortages in stock and uncertainty over procurement procedures have directly affected the operation of distribution centres.
Leadership
The council chairman called for a comprehensive review, requesting a clear list of facilities and services under municipal responsibility to ensure accountability and effective decision making. Members agreed that clearer communication with citizens is required whenever delays occur.
Action
The extraordinary session will bring together all relevant parties to define responsibilities, address shortages and agree on immediate corrective measures. Council members reaffirmed that the waste bag issue will remain under close scrutiny until resolved swiftly, ensuring that essential municipal services are delivered efficiently and without further disruption.
