The Civil Defence Council held a meeting on Sunday morning chaired by Shaikh Rashid bin Abdullah Al Khalifa, Minister of Interior and Chairman of the Council. The meeting was attended by ministers and senior officials from several government sectors, including foreign affairs, finance and national economy, transportation and telecommunications, municipalities and agriculture, oil and environment, electricity and water, health, information, industry and commerce, and sustainable development.
At the start of the meeting, the Chairman welcomed the members and said the session was part of ongoing efforts to strengthen civil protection measures and enhance public safety.
The Council reviewed the latest developments of the Wireless Emergency Alerts (WEA) early warning system project. The discussion focused on reviewing procedures, emergency scenarios, and the roles of government entities, as well as key strategic areas related to preparedness and emergency response. Priority was given to national readiness and stronger coordination among relevant sectors to ensure public safety.
The project aims to provide essential information to citizens and residents before, during, and after emergencies. It represents a major step forward in public warning and communication methods, ensuring that all citizens and residents receive emergency alerts within a short and standard time frame.
During the meeting, the Council also reviewed implementation measures and operational preparations ahead of activating the service in the coming period, following the completion of infrastructure and operational requirements.
In this context, the Chairman stressed the importance of launching the system through phased trial operations and clearly defining the types of emergencies it will cover. He noted that the project reflects the government’s commitment to adopting international best practices in civil protection and emergency management, while developing a strong digital infrastructure capable of handling various emergency scenarios.
He added that enhancing early warning systems and ensuring alerts reach all segments of society through multiple channels form part of broader community awareness programmes, along with providing updated risk information and improving data sharing among concerned authorities.
At the conclusion of the meeting, the Chairman expressed his appreciation to Council members for their efforts in strengthening cooperation and coordination. He highlighted the importance of these efforts in improving preventive civil protection measures, assessing readiness levels, and increasing safety for all citizens and residents.
