In a powerful display of youth leadership and environmental stewardship, the shores of Malkiya Beach were transformed this past Friday, January 9, 2026. The WMC Toastmasters and Gavel Club, in collaboration with OneHeartBahrain, Urbaser, and Al Mahd School, successfully hosted a youth-led "Eco Awareness & Action Beach Cleanup." The event, which ran from 2:15 pm to 5:00 pm, drew a diverse crowd of over 200 participants, including students, educators, and families. What began as a cleanup initiative evolved into a dynamic outdoor classroom, bridging the gap between environmental theory and hands-on community service.

The initiative was the brainchild of WMC Toastmasters and its youth wing, the Gavel Club. Supported by OneHeartBahrain—a movement dedicated to social inclusion and environmental responsibility—the event operated under the unifying theme of “One Heart, One Community, One Earth.” Gavel Club members took a central role, delivering eco-awareness speeches and providing mentorship to younger children. This peer-to-peer leadership style highlighted the club’s mission to foster communication and teamwork through service.

The cleanup was bolstered by several key community partners. The environmental services company Urbaser provided their interactive Eco Bus, which featured live demonstrations on recycling, waste management, and sustainable living. Al Mahd School participated with a large group of students and faculty, showcasing the vital role schools play in nurturing ecological responsibility. Additionally, the proceedings were supported by The Path Bahrain.

Mr. Roy Skaria, President of WMC Toastmasters, noted that the initiative allows young people to lead by example. He emphasized that through communication and teamwork, the Gavel Club members demonstrated how youth leadership can create real environmental impact.

For the many families in attendance, the day offered a sobering yet empowering look at how daily consumption habits affect Bahrain’s marine and coastal ecosystems. Reflecting on the success of the day, Mr. Skaria added that the event was far more than a simple cleanup, as it helped spread awareness about the importance of eco-preservation through activities spearheaded by the youngsters themselves. As the afternoon concluded, the shared message of walking and working together toward a cleaner and greener future resonated strongly with all who attended.
