The spirit of the Tamil harvest festival came alive at the Indian Club premises on January 9, 2026, as Bahrain Solvendhar Mandram hosted a grand Pongal celebration. The event brought together over 300 families and children for a day dedicated to cultural heritage, tradition, and community bonding.
The festivities commenced in the morning with the traditional boiling of the "Pongal" pot. Participants gathered to witness the rice and milk overflow toward the sun, followed by a solemn sun worship ceremony and a rhythmic Kummi dance. Adding to the authentic atmosphere, attendees arrived in traditional Tamil attire, with men wearing dhotis and women dressed in vibrant sarees.
The celebration moved to the Indian Club auditorium for a series of cultural performances. Club President Thiru Jothibasu welcomed the gathering, setting the stage for a showcase of local talent. Children captivated the audience with traditional dances choreographed by Mrs. Vasuki Veerakumar and demonstrated their skills in Silambam, an ancient Tamil martial art. The program also featured melodic songs and a spirited, humorous debate segment that provided entertainment for all ages.
The event concluded with a vote of thanks delivered by Event Coordinator Thiru Maruthu Pandian, followed by a grand traditional feast. In keeping with custom, a massive lunch was served to all guests on banana leaves, marking a successful end to one of the community's most significant cultural gatherings of the year.
