Bahrain Urges Collective Action to Eliminate Weapons of Mass Destruction in the Middle East

New York: Permanent Representative of the Kingdom of Bahrain to the United Nations in New York, Jamal Fares Al Ruwaiei ,participated in a United Nations Security Council briefing.
During the briefing, Al Ruwaiei underscored the vital role of the Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW) in strengthening international security and protecting humanity from the threat of chemical weapons. He stressed the importance of collective efforts to rid the Middle East of weapons of mass destruction.
Al Ruwaiei called on the international community to support the Syrian Arab Republic at this critical stage, affirming that Syria’s security and stability are fundamental to regional stability. He urged continued support for the Syrian government and the OPCW to enable them to complete their work and close the chemical weapons file, noting Syria’s initiatives to fulfil its obligations to the OPCW.
He commended the close cooperation and ongoing coordination between the Syrian government and the OPCW in accordance with Security Council Resolution 2118, highlighting Syria’s transparency and credibility in addressing the chemical weapons issue, as well as its efforts to restore its regional and international standing and advance political reform.
Al Ruwaiei reaffirmed Bahrain’s support for Syria’s sovereignty, independence, and territorial integrity, rejecting foreign interference. He emphasised that international backing for Syria during this transitional phase is essential to ensure an orderly and smooth political transition in line with Security Council Resolution 2254.
