Police Accountability: Three Officers Sent to Court Following Unit Investigations
The Acting Attorney General and Head of the Special Investigation Unit, Mr. Mohammed Khalid Al-Hazzaa, announced that the unit received 15 complaints during the last third of 2025. The complaints included allegations of torture and ill-treatment, all of which were investigated according to the unit’s legal mandate.
During this period, the unit interviewed 29 complainants and witnesses, and questioned 25 police personnel who were suspects. Additionally, 10 complainants were referred for forensic medical and psychological support.
Regarding accountability measures, the unit completed investigations into two complaints of physical abuse. As a result, three police officers were referred to the criminal court, where one received a one-month prison sentence and the other two received three-month sentences.
Disciplinary actions were also taken against several police personnel in a previously referred case, based on the unit’s authority to send cases to the Police Courts Division of the Ministry of Interior.
In line with its commitment to training and international standards, the unit organized a workshop on 10 December 2025, titled “From Documentation to Accountability: A Review of the Revised Istanbul Protocol to Strengthen National Protection”, coinciding with Human Rights Day. The workshop brought together around 60 representatives from law enforcement, criminal justice agencies, and civil society organizations. Sessions covered the Istanbul Protocol, its international legal framework, medical and psychological examination procedures, and national experiences in applying the protocol, including lessons learned and improvements made.
