A plan to install electronic screens for parliamentary and municipal campaign material, and for other commercial advertising, won majority backing from the Southern Municipal Council.
Council Chairman Abdulla Abdullatif, who put forward the screens plan, said the aim is to catch the eye of passers-by, allow quick updates to what is shown, encourage audience interaction, and cut visual clutter. He added that candidates would be able to run their campaigns on the screens while traditional methods continue. He said national firms and the wider private sector could be invited to invest, and described the move as a first for the council.
Member Mubarak Faraj asked if wooden frames for roadside adverts would end if the plan goes ahead. The chairman replied that the idea is meant to improve campaigning and reduce clutter.
Member Khalid Shajra said large adverts have built up in certain spots in a random way, which harms the streetscape. He said a more modern method is needed, especially if offered at reasonable rates, which may draw people away from paper posters. He also noted that much of the world is turning to artificial intelligence and its uses.
