Bahrain road crashes up 6.6% last year; Manama records 14 deaths

Road crashes rose by 6.6 per cent in 2024, climbing to 903 cases from 847 in 2023, according to figures on the Open Data Portal.

While total crashes went up, fatal cases dipped from 63 to 60.

Injury cases moved the other way: serious injuries rose from 439 to 475 and minor injuries from 347 to 368.

Manama logged the most incidents with 188 crashes in 2024.

Fatal

Fourteen were fatal, 105 led to serious injury and 69 were minor.

Hidd and Isa Town recorded the fewest crashes at 24 each. No deaths were recorded in Hidd, while Isa Town saw four.

By deaths, Manama led with 14, followed by Riffa with 10, the Central area with nine, Sitra with seven and the Western area with five. Hidd and Hawar Island recorded none.

Serious

Of the 475 serious-injury cases, Manama accounted for 105, Riffa 67 and Muharraq 51; Hidd and Isa Town posted the lowest tallies with 12 and 13.

For minor injuries, Manama logged 69, Riffa 59 and the Central area 50, with Isa Town lowest at seven.

The profile of those hurt shows men bearing most of the harm.

Among passengers, females recorded one death, 41 serious injuries and 115 minor, compared with 12 deaths, 82 serious and 117 minor for males.

Pedestrian

In pedestrian incidents, there were two female deaths and 14 male deaths.

Minor injuries totalled 43 for females and 80 for males, while serious injuries stood at 25 for females and 131 for males.

Accidents caused by pedestrians themselves resulted in four deaths, 38 serious injuries and 38 minor.

Behaviours

The main behaviours were wrong road crossing and running in the street, each linked to 17 serious injuries.

Crashes caused by drivers led to 37 deaths, 232 serious injuries and 211 minor.

Behaviours such as playing in the road or walking behind parked vehicles produced no deaths and only minor or mid-level injuries.

The dataset covered 11 areas: Manama, Muharraq, the Northern, Central and Western regions, Hamad Town, Hidd, Riffa, Isa Town, Jidhafs and Sitra.
