Court of Cassation Rejects Appeal in Iran Attack Support Case
The Bahrain Court of Cassation has rejected an appeal filed by a defendant convicted in a case involving social media posts that supported, praised and justified attacks against Bahrain attributed to Iran, according to the Public Prosecution.
The court upheld the five-year prison sentence, a BD2,000 fine, and the confiscation of the seized items.
The case began after the Cybercrime Directorate of the General Directorate of Anti-Corruption, Economic and Electronic Security reported a social media account containing images, videos and comments that allegedly supported and justified the attacks targeting Bahrain.
Investigations identified the person operating the account. The Public Prosecution then questioned the defendant, heard witness statements and appointed technical experts to examine the seized electronic devices. According to the prosecution, the examination confirmed the acts attributed to the defendant.
The case was referred to the High Criminal Court, which considered it over several hearings while providing the defendant with the legally guaranteed rights, including the right to defence.
The court subsequently sentenced the defendant to five years in prison, fined him BD2,000 and ordered the confiscation of the seized items.
The defendant appealed the ruling, but the appellate court accepted the appeal procedurally and rejected it on its merits, upholding the original judgment.
The defendant then filed a cassation appeal. The Court of Cassation rejected the appeal on procedural grounds, leaving the sentence in place.
The Public Prosecution stressed that freedom of opinion and expression is guaranteed within the limits of the law, and that exercising this right through social media requires compliance with applicable legal rules to prevent the platforms from being used in ways that threaten public security or stability.
