Bahrain Strengthens Fishery Data Systems in Partnership with FAO
The Supreme Council for Environment in Bahrain welcomed a delegation from the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) as part of ongoing efforts to advance statistical systems and methodologies in the Kingdom’s fisheries sector. The collaboration aims to bolster the sustainable management of marine resources.
During the meeting, Mr. Mohammed Yousif Al Asim, Director General of Marine Resources, emphasized that enhancing fishery statistics represents a strategic step toward improving the accuracy of data on fish stocks and fishing activities. He noted that reliable information is vital for informed decision-making, environmental policy development, and the efficient management of marine resources to ensure long-term sustainability. This initiative also aligns with regional and international reporting requirements in the fisheries sector.
Al Asim highlighted that the partnership with FAO reflects Bahrain’s commitment to adopting global best practices in fisheries management. The collaboration focuses on developing monitoring and analysis tools that maximize the sustainable use of marine resources and support related Sustainable Development Goals.
The FAO delegation also toured key fisheries sites and facilities across the Kingdom, observing data collection and analysis methods, exchanging technical expertise, and exploring international best practices. These efforts aim to enhance the efficiency, transparency, and effectiveness of Bahrain’s national fisheries statistics system.
