Bahrain has led the Gulf in expressing heartfelt condolences over the passing of His Royal Highness Prince Al Waleed bin Khalid bin Talal Al Saud, known as the ‘Sleeping Prince’, whose prolonged medical struggle captured hearts across the Arab world.

His Majesty King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa and His Royal Highness Prince Salman bin Hamad Al Khalifa, the Crown Prince and Prime Minister, conveyed their condolences to the Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques King Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud. In their messages, they extended deep sympathies to the Saudi royal family and the people of Saudi Arabia, praying for eternal peace for the deceased and strength for his family.

Prince’s legacy HRH Prince Al Waleed bin Khalid bin Talal Al Saud, known as the ‘Sleeping Prince’, passed away at the age of 36 after spending nearly 20 years in a coma. The prince suffered a severe brain injury in a car accident in London in 2005 while attending a military college.

He was later moved to King Abdulaziz Medical City in Riyadh, where he remained on life support and was tube-fed for the rest of his life.

His father, HRH Prince Khalid bin Talal, consistently refused medical advice to withdraw care, citing faith and the will of God. In 2019, minor reflexes such as finger movements and head turns sparked hope, though no recovery followed.

Final rites

Funeral prayers were held yesterday after Asr prayer at Imam Turki bin Abdullah Mosque in Riyadh. Condolences are being received at the family palace for three days.

HRH Prince Al Waleed’s condition became a national symbol of patience, spiritual endurance, and a father’s unwavering devotion, capturing the compassion of millions across the Arab world.
