Bahrain’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Ambassador Jamal Fares Al-Ruwaiei, took part in the selection and honoring of the 2025 United Nations Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela Prize winners. He participated as the representative of the Asia-Pacific Group during a special ceremony held in New York on July 18, which coincided with the UN’s annual celebration of Nelson Mandela International Day.

The prestigious award ceremony was led by UN Secretary-General António Guterres and the President of the UN General Assembly, Philemon Yang. Together, they presented the award to this year’s honorees:

Brenda Reynolds, a social guide from Canada who has played a vital role in promoting the health and well-being of Indigenous communities. Her most notable achievement includes creating a health support program specifically for survivors of the Indian Residential School system.

Kennedy Odede, founder and CEO of Shining Hope for Communities (SHOFCO), a grassroots Kenyan organization that delivers essential services to underserved urban communities. His impactful work has now reached over 2.5 million people across Kenya.

The Nelson Mandela Prize is awarded every five years to two individuals—one male and one female—who have dedicated their lives to serving humanity. The honor reflects the values of the United Nations and the enduring legacy of Nelson Mandela, celebrating outstanding achievements in promoting peace, equality, and human rights.
