As part of its ongoing efforts to promote environmental sustainability and cleanliness, the Southern Municipality has officially launched its first recycling bin distribution campaign. The initiative began at Al-Hikma Society for Retirees and the Al-Manar Home for Parental Care and will expand to include various public and private schools as well as other community institutions.
This campaign is part of a broader plan to distribute over 300 sorting and recycling bins across the Southern Governorate in 2025.
Each bin comes in one of three distinct colors to help make waste sorting easier at the source:
Blue for plastic waste
Green for paper waste
Light Blue for metal waste
The aim is to encourage residents and institutions to play a more active role in protecting the environment, while also raising awareness about the importance of community partnership in waste reduction. The initiative is aligned with Public Cleanliness Law No. 10 of 2019.
After collection, the sorted waste is handed over to the cleaning company Urbaser, which can be contacted through their hotline: 80070000 for proper recycling according to national standards.
The campaign also includes awareness workshops on how to correctly sort waste at home and use the color-coded bins. By doing so, the municipality hopes to increase recycling rates and reduce harmful emissions, supporting Bahrain’s national goals for sustainable development and the preservation of natural resources.
This initiative highlights the crucial role that individuals and civil society organizations play in making environmental programs successful and sustainable.
