Portugal international Diogo Jota and his brother die in a fatal car accident in Zamora.
Tragedy on the A-52
Portugal and Liverpool forward Diogo Jota has died in a fatal car crash in Spain alongside his younger brother, André. The accident occurred on Thursday on the A-52 motorway in the municipality of Cernadilla, Zamora.
The 28-year-old, who was enjoying the off-season break following his wedding just two weeks ago, was reportedly in a car that caught fire following a serious collision. Emergency services confirmed both occupants of the vehicle were pronounced dead at the scene.
Emergency Response and Confirmation
Multiple emergency units responded to the call, including the Traffic Civil Guard, the Fire Brigade of the Zamora Provincial Council, and medical teams from the Mombuey Health Centre. Despite efforts, both Diogo and his brother, a footballer for Penafiel, were declared dead upon arrival.
The Castilla y León emergency services released a statement confirming the crash and fire, stating that several calls were received from the public reporting the burning vehicle in the middle of the road.
A Career Cut Short
Jota joined Liverpool from Wolverhampton Wanderers in 2020 and quickly became a key figure under Jurgen Klopp. In just four years, he made 182 appearances, scored 65 goals, and lifted two Premier League titles. He was widely admired for his versatility and work ethic on and off the pitch.
Before that, he had risen through Gondomar’s youth system in Porto, before making moves to Atlético Madrid, Porto (on loan), and Wolves.
Heartbreak After Celebration
The tragedy strikes just two weeks after Jota married his long-term partner, Rute Cardoso, in Porto. The couple had three children and shared their wedding day joy with family and fans alike on social media, captioning the moment, “Yes to forever.”
What was meant to be a new beginning has ended in devastating loss — for his family, his clubs, and a footballing nation.
