A woman was dragged from sleep by gas sprayed in her face before being beaten to the ground by her husband, who accused her of conspiring to kill him, a court has heard.

The blows, delivered with fists and a metal weight, fractured both jaws and knocked out nine of her teeth.

The injuries left her with a lasting impairment assessed at 10 per cent.

The First High Criminal Court has postponed further hearings to 27 May to allow time for review and response.

Custody

The accused remains in custody.

He denies the charge of assault, although he has admitted to using a mind-altering substance on the day in question.

The Public Prosecution alleges the attack took place in the early hours of 13 March.

The man, under the influence of narcotics, is said to have launched an unprovoked assault on his wife while she was asleep.

Charge sheet

According to the charge sheet, he struck her repeatedly with his fists and then with a metal weight, leaving her with serious injuries including a double jaw fracture and the loss of several teeth.

Court documents state the victim told prosecutors she was in deep sleep when her husband woke her by spraying something into her face.

He began mumbling strange accusations, saying she was trying to kill him.

He pushed her from the bed and attempted to tie her hands behind her back.

Resistance

When she resisted, he punched her in the face several times and slammed her head against the floor.

She said she managed to get up while bleeding heavily from her mouth and nose.

He then knocked her down again, pinned her to the floor and picked up a metal weight.

She told the court he demanded she admit to plotting his murder, accused her of prostitution, and claimed her mother had been bringing men to her.

Out of fear, she played along. He went on to strike her left knee several times and hit her right shoulder with force.

Violence

The violence stopped only when the man’s mother and brother arrived and knocked on the door.

The brother said in court that he had heard screams and rushed to the floor where the couple lived.

He found their mother standing at the doorway pleading with the accused to open it.

When he did, the wife ran out of the room.

Terrible condition

He said she was in a terrible condition. Her face was swollen, her teeth had been knocked out, and blood was pouring from her nose and mouth.

He told her to leave the house and go straight to the police. When asked afterwards why he had attacked her, the accused appeared calm.

By the time police reached the property, he had already escaped.

Injuries

The forensic report confirmed the victim’s injuries matched her statement.

The trauma was consistent with forceful blows from blunt objects. Doctors estimated her treatment would take more than 20 days.
