Northern Municipal Council member Abdullah Ashour has criticised the Ministry of Municipalities Affairs’ response to his proposal for the urgent installation of surveillance cameras and speed monitoring devices on the Shaikh Zayed Highway and Road 12, stretching between the areas of Al Ramli and Salmabad.
Ashour submitted a request in 2023, and in 2024, but the response he received was the same; “this is part of the plan”.
Treacherous zones
During the regular meeting of the Council yesterday, he stressed that these roads have transformed into treacherous zones, posing grave threats to the safety and lives of both citizens and residents due to rampant reckless driving and excessive speeding.
Ashour revealed that locals have grimly dubbed both roads as the “Death Streets” in light of the alarming surge in severe and fatal accidents that have plagued the vicinity.
“The escalating death toll and accident rates are direct consequences of the brazen and perilous conduct exhibited by some motorists, constituting a tangible menace to public safety,” he said, disturbingly, citing the tragic case of a six-year-old girl who lost her life on this very street earlier this year.
Dismay
Furthermore, Ashour expressed dismay at the Ministry of Municipalities’ failure to forward the necessary correspondence to the Ministry of Interior. “Instead, they merely reattached the same response from the General Traffic Department that was provided in October 2023,” he said.
He highlighted that the rationale behind the urgent installation of cameras on these hazardous thoroughfares was meticulously articulated in his original request, issuing an impassioned call for more decisive and expeditious action to address the mounting safety concerns gripping the area.
