Tighter enforcement of traffic laws are urged to save the Muharraq Old market from the mayhem created by mindless motorcyclists and their late-night gathering.

Residents they are tired of the noise created by late-night gatherings of expat workers and careless driving behaviours.

Imposing parking fees and improving drivers conduct are suggest among the solutions.

In a recent meeting at the Muharraq Municipal Council, councillor Ahmed Al Moqahwi proposed allocating specific land for delivery motorbikes, particularly in residential areas and around the crowded old market.

Al Moqahwi noted that the council’s Financial and Legal Committee had met with a food delivery company to the issue.

One firm, he said, had agreed to raise awareness among its drivers about respecting traffic laws and avoiding gatherings near homes.

The council has now formally urged the Ministry of Municipalities Affairs and Agriculture to establish designated zones for delivery drivers to gather, with the costs passed on to the companies.

Al Moqahwi also suggested turning unused municipal lands into attractions.

He proposed building a model cricket ground, an entertainment park, and even Muharraq’s first public swimming pool, offering residents relief from the summer heat and increasing the area’s appeal to visitors.

These plots, some of which have sat idle for over 40 years, could provide a new opportunity for investment and community enjoyment.

Elsewhere, councillor Abdulqader Al Sayed pressed for digital payment options at the Grand Muharraq Park, citing requests from residents keen on easier ways to pay for parking.
