MOSCOW: Russian forces shot down 596 Ukrainian drones in a massive overnight attack that left four people dead, including a child, the defence ministry announced Wednesday.
The fatalities occurred in Novorossiysk in the southern Krasnodar region, where governor Veniamin Kondratyev reported that military personnel repelled the wave after the city was hit hardest.
The overnight bombardment came just a day after President Vladimir Putin spoke by telephone with US President Donald Trump to discuss ways to resolve the ongoing conflict.
Washington has been pushing for direct face-to-face negotiations between Russia and Ukraine. Ukrainian officials indicated that potential talks could happen later this month.
However, the Kremlin responded by noting that it is still too early to evaluate or discuss specific venues and dates for any summit.
