Brasília, Brazil: Brazil has ordered messaging platform Discord to halt livestreaming and video calls after a 13-year-old girl was goaded into suicide during a broadcast. Discord confirmed compliance on Monday following a binding directive from the National Data Protection Agency.

Regulators imposed the suspension after determining that the company failed to implement adequate safeguards for minors. Under the order, screen sharing and video features are blocked nationwide, though Brazilian users can still access text messages and audio calls.

The legal action follows the arrest of five teenagers and an adult in western central Brazil. Authorities stated the suspects spent 45 minutes pressuring the young girl during a stream, initially urging her to harm an animal before goading her into self-harm.

Discord co-founder Stanislav Vishnevskiy pledged to cooperate with officials to enhance safety, noting that the campaign involved multiple digital platforms. Meanwhile, First Lady Rosangela da Silva urged authorities to remove the entire network from the internet.

The crackdown aligns with Brazil's broader efforts to tighten online child protections and enforce parental oversight across social networks.
