12 Killed as Polish Bus Veers Off Hungary Highway

Budapest, Hungary: A Polish bus carrying pilgrims crashed into a ditch on a Hungarian highway early Sunday, killing 12 people and leaving at least 10 others critically injured.
The coach, traveling from Serbia back to Poland with 57 passengers and two drivers, veered off the M3 highway near Mezokeresztes.
Eleven passengers were declared dead at the scene while another died in the hospital, with five survivors currently fighting for their lives.
Emergency services transported another 37 people with minor injuries to nearby hospitals, while Hungarian police detained the driver for reportedly falling asleep at the wheel.
Rescuers had to drag trapped passengers out through windows under the crushed roof before heavy cranes lifted the vehicle out of the ditch.
Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk dispatched a special flight carrying medical specialists and consular aid to Budapest, while Polish prosecutors launched an immediate inquiry to clarify the circumstances.
The disaster represents Hungary's worst road accident since 2003, when a train hit a German tourist bus and killed 33 people.
