Washington: US President Donald Trump praised the new Mecca Joint Defence Agreement between Saudi Arabia, Turkey, and Pakistan, calling it a ‘big, bold, and important first step’ toward greater regional security.

The agreement was signed on August 7 by Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, and Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif. It declares that an armed attack on any of the three countries will be considered an attack on all, establishing a mutual-defence commitment equivalent to NATO's Article 5.

The pact also calls for improved political and military coordination, joint drills, and collaboration in sectors such as air, sea, land, and cyber defence. Turkey has emphasised that the pact is defensive and not aimed against any specific country.

Trump stated that the pact demonstrates that countries in the Middle East are coming together and would be able to protect themselves better. His backing comes amid rising regional tensions and a continuing battle with Iran.
