GCC Condemns Iranian Attack on Two UAE Vessels in Strait of Hormuz

The Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) has condemned what it described as repeated Iranian attacks targeting two tankers belonging to the UAE-based energy company ADNOC while they were transiting the Strait of Hormuz.

GCC Secretary-General Jassem Mohamed Albudaiwi said in a statement that the attacks represent a serious and unacceptable escalation and pose a direct threat to the safety and security of maritime navigation and international trade through one of the world’s most vital waterways.

Albudaiwi stressed that the attacks violate the principles of international law, including the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea, as well as relevant UN Security Council resolutions, including Resolution 2817.

He strongly rejected any Iranian attempts to use the strategic international waterway as a tool for pressure or threats. He called on the international community to fulfil its responsibilities and take a firm stance to stop such repeated attacks and ensure the security and freedom of maritime navigation in accordance with international law, the law of the sea and relevant international resolutions.

The GCC Secretary-General also reaffirmed the Council’s full and steadfast solidarity with the United Arab Emirates, stressing its support for the UAE and for all measures it takes to protect its security, sovereignty, property and interests.

The Strait of Hormuz is one of the world’s most strategically important maritime routes, serving as a major passage for international energy shipments and global trade.
