308 Abducted Nigerians Rescued in Largest Single-Day Security Operation

Abuja: Nigerian security forces have rescued 308 people abducted in separate attacks in Niger and Kwara states in what the government says is the country's largest single-day rescue operation.

The operation, carried out by the military, police, intelligence agencies and the National Counter-Terrorism Centre (NCTC), freed victims from the Kainji Lake National Park in Niger State. Those rescued included 163 people kidnapped during a deadly February attack on the Woro community in Kwara State, while at least 145 others had been abducted in Niger State.

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu welcomed the rescue, saying it reflected improved coordination among Nigeria's security agencies. The victims are receiving medical treatment before being reunited with their families. Authorities have not said whether any suspects were arrested.

The February attack on Woro, which the government blamed on the jihadist group Boko Haram, left scores of people dead. Rights group Amnesty International said many victims were found bound, with some shot and others having their throats slit.

The rescue comes weeks after 44 pupils and teachers kidnapped in a school attack in Oyo State were freed following a prolonged security operation, as concerns grow over the spread of kidnappings and armed violence beyond Nigeria's traditional conflict zones.
