Expanding Lakes in Kenya Bring Crocodiles Into Villages

Nairobi: Rising water levels in several of Kenya's Rift Valley lakes raise the possibility of dangerous human-crocodile encounters as the reptiles move into flooded villages, farms, and fishing regions.

Lakes have grown larger due to years of extremely excessive rainfall and changing weather patterns, submerging homes, roads, and agriculture and reducing the distance between wildlife areas and human communities. Crocodiles are being sighted in areas where they were previously rare, prompting fears among local populations.

Residents report that attacks on cattle have increased, while fisherman and people fetching water suffer increasing risks along the lakeshore. Many families living near the affected lakes are concerned about their safety, as crocodiles are increasingly found in flooded fields, canals, and residential areas.

The Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS) has increased patrols, public awareness campaigns, and monitoring efforts in the worst-affected areas. Officials have asked citizens to remain careful, avoid entering crocodile-infested waters, and immediately report any sightings to wildlife officials.

Experts warn that the expanding lakes reflect the growing impact of climate-related environmental changes, which are altering ecosystems and escalating human-wildlife conflicts. They suggest long-term solutions, such as better land-use planning and animal management, will be required to protect both communities and biodiversity.
