Historic Mission: Ukrainian Firefighters Aid France in Wildfire Battle

Le temple: A team of Ukrainian firefighters has joined the fight against massive wildfire in southwestern France, marking the first time Ukraine has sent rescue workers to help France fight forest fires.

Following a 52-hour trek via Poland and Germany, 70 firemen arrived in France in a convoy of 15 trucks, including ten fire engines. The deployment was organised under the European Union Civil Protection Mechanism, as European nations strengthen cooperation to combat an intense wildfire season.

Firefighters have been deployed to the Gironde region, where flames have destroyed approximately 42,000 hectares of land, forcing hundreds of thousands of civilians to flee. Although the fire has been mostly managed, firefighters continue to deal with remaining hotspots and attempt to avoid further flare-ups in the hot, dry conditions.

French officials welcomed the Ukrainian delegation, describing it as an exceptional show of unity. The deployment demonstrates rising international collaboration in responding to climate-related natural disasters, even as Ukraine continues to face domestic security challenges.
