Al-Shabaab Seizes Strategic Town in Central Somalia

Mogadishu, Somalia: Islamist militant group Al-Shabaab has taken control of the strategic town of Teedaan in central Somalia following nearly a day of heavy fighting with government forces and allied local militias, according to the group and local residents.

Locals said government troops and militia fighters withdrew from Teedaan on Sunday after almost 24 hours of clashes, allowing Al-Shabaab fighters to enter the town. The group also claimed it captured weapons, vehicles and other military equipment during the operation.

Teedaan is located along a key route linking parts of the Hiiraan, Galgaduud and Middle Shabelle regions. Control of the town could strengthen Al-Shabaab's ability to move fighters and collect taxes from vehicles travelling along the road.

Residents said the fighting caused casualties on both sides, although no official figures have been released. Local militia members said government forces have since taken up positions on the outskirts of the town, while Al-Shabaab has begun fortifying its new positions.

The Somali government has not commented on the reported capture. However, President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud recently told parliament that Al-Shabaab's military, financial and social influence was weakening despite the group's continued attacks.

The development comes weeks after Somalia's military campaign faced a setback following Washington's announcement that it would end funding for UN logistical support for the African Union mission by the end of the year, a move expected to affect ongoing operations against Al-Shabaab.
