Venezuela Earthquake Death Toll Climbs Past 6,00

The death toll from the twin earthquakes in northern Venezuela on June 24 has increased to 6,125, according to new data given by National Assembly President Jorge Rodríguez. The violent 7.2- and 7.5-magnitude earthquakes destroyed much of the country, with the coastal state of La Guaira sustaining the most damage.

Authorities reported that about 61,000 people have undergone hospital treatment since the disaster, and rescue and recovery teams are still scouring through collapsed structures. So far, just 16.5% of the immense debris left by the earthquakes has been cleaned, showing the magnitude of the devastation and the obstacles that recovery operations face.

Survivors and opposition parties have criticised the government's response, claiming that rescue operations were delayed and ineffective, trapping many victims under rubble for long periods of time. Acting President Delcy Rodríguez defended the administration's handling of the incident, claiming emergency workers were deployed as soon as feasible.

The June earthquakes became the deadliest natural disasters in Venezuela's recent history, causing severe damage to houses, hospitals, roadways, and public infrastructure. Thousands of families remain homeless as authorities work to provide relief, remove debris, and plan for a permanent reconstruction.
