SEOUL: South Korea's weather agency has issued its first-ever ‘severe heatwave warning’ for Seoul under a new advisory system introduced this year. The emergency alert was triggered as an unrelenting heatwave threatens the capital city's nine million residents.
The declaration follows unprecedented weekend heat that broke all-time national records, with the mercury soaring to 42.5°C. The sweltering conditions led to nearly 300 hospitalizations nationwide, prompting health authorities to urge extreme caution.
On Monday, apparent ‘feels-like’ temperatures in Seoul hit 35°C, with forecasts predicting up to 38°C on Tuesday. Officials advised residents to postpone outdoor work and seek air-conditioned spaces or designated heat relief shelters.
