Court acquits former India wrestling chief in sexual harassment case

New Delhi: The Delhi court on Monday acquitted former Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) chief Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh and former WFI assistant secretary Vinod Tomar in a sexual harassment case filed by six female wrestlers, putting an end to one of the country's most significant sports-related legal battles.
In 2023, several notable wrestlers staged nationwide rallies against the previous WFI officials, accusing them of sexual harassment and wrongdoing. Following the conclusion of closing arguments, the court determined that both defendants were not guilty of the crimes levelled against them.
The ruling brings to an end a case with far-reaching repercussions for Indian wrestling and sports regulation. Following the acquittal, wrestler Vinesh Phogat stated that the fight for justice would continue and that the verdict might be appealed in a higher court.
