Buenos Aires: Argentine President Javier Milei has escalated a diplomatic rift with Brazil by doubling down on his personal insults against President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.
Speaking in a Sunday television interview, Milei reaffirmed his claims that Lula is a ‘thief’ and a ‘corrupt’ official. The controversy began after Milei voiced support for Lula's right-wing political opponent in Brazil, prompting Brasilia to recall its ambassador for consultations.
Despite attempts by Argentine spokespersons to frame the dispute as routine political disagreement, Milei defended his aggressive stance, arguing that calling a thief a thief is far less serious than stealing. Lula previously served 580 days in prison before his corruption convictions were overturned on procedural grounds.
