Nationwide blackout hits Cuba as state energy firm reports grid failure

Havana: Cuba witnessed another nationwide blackout as the country's state-run electrical utility, Unión Eléctrica (UNE), reported a failure of the national power grid, leaving millions of people without power.

The blackout struck much of the island and is the latest in a series of massive power outages that have hampered daily life, businesses, and crucial services. Officials said attempts were ongoing to restore power, but they did not immediately provide an explanation for the grid failure or an estimated time of full recovery.

Cuba's electricity system has been under increasing strain from ageing equipment, persistent fuel shortages, and inadequate maintenance, resulting in frequent blackouts in recent years. The government has been working to stabilise the system through emergency repairs and greater investment, as well as opening up areas of the energy sector to private and international participation to help address the long-running crisis.
