Saudi Arabia advances plans for a multinational maritime defense alliance

Saudi Arabia has taken a key step toward establishing a multinational maritime defense alliance after hosting a meeting with chiefs of staff, military representatives from friendly countries, and the European Union delegation.

The Ministry of Defense said representatives from 43 countries and the EU participated in the meeting, discussing growing threats to maritime security, including attacks on commercial vessels, energy tankers, and critical infrastructure. Participants stressed the need for stronger international cooperation to protect global shipping routes and safeguard the world economy.

The meeting reviewed the proposed alliance's draft charter, command structure, governance framework, and operational plans. The initiative aims to enhance security in the Bab al-Mandab Strait, the Red Sea, and the Gulf of Aden.

Saudi Arabia proposed serving as the founding and leading nation while hosting the alliance's headquarters. Fourteen countries signed a joint declaration supporting the initiative, while other participating nations are expected to join after completing their national approval procedures before the alliance is formally launched.
