10 climbers, including renowned Nepali mountaineer, missing after Pakistan avalanche

Islamabad: Ten foreign climbers have been reported missing following a massive avalanche that slammed Broad Peak (8,047 meters) in Pakistan's Karakoram range, including renowned Nepali mountaineer Nirmal ‘Nims’ Purja. Following the avalanche during their trek, the crew lost contact, necessitating an immediate search and rescue effort.
Five Nepali climbers, a Pakistani mountaineer, climbers from Oman, China, and the United States, as well as another foreign climber, are among the missing crew. The Alpine Club of Pakistan is coordinating rescue attempts, but activities are challenging due to the remote, high-altitude environment and bad weather.
Purja, who is a former Gurkha and British Special Boat Service soldier, acquired global recognition for climbing all 14 of the world's 8,000-meter peaks in a record 189 days in 2019. The achievement was included in the Netflix documentary 14 Peaks: Nothing Is Impossible.
