Three firefighters killed battling Greece wildfires

Athens: Three firemen were killed on Wednesday in fighting rapidly spreading wildfires in Greece, where extreme heat and strong winds fuelled various blazes across the country, according to officials. The deaths occurred as rescue services tried to control fires that forced mass evacuations and caused significant devastation.

Two firemen died while combating a huge wildfire on the island of Crete, and a third died fighting a minor fire in the Peloponnese region. Hundreds of firefighters, aided by water-dropping aircraft and helicopters, are still working to put out the fire.

The wildfires destroyed houses, olive groves, and vast areas of farmland, and thousands of residents and tourists have been evacuated from hazardous areas. Several routes are stopped, and authorities continue to issue emergency alerts as fires rage across multiple locations.

Greece, like numerous other southern European countries, has been hit by a severe heatwave, resulting in dangerous wildfire conditions. Officials cautioned that high temperatures, low humidity, and strong winds will keep the fire risk at severe levels, complicating firefighting efforts in the coming days.
