London: Prince Harry and 6 high-profile figures face potentially crippling out-of-pocket legal expenses after losing their landmark privacy lawsuit against Daily Mail publisher Associated Newspapers Limited (ANL).

During a High Court costs hearing on Wednesday, ANL’s legal team demanded the claimants cover a significant portion of the publisher’s £34 million ($45 million) legal bill.

The lawsuit filed by Harry, Sir Elton John, Elizabeth Hurley, and others accused Daily Mail journalists of bugging vehicles, tapping phones, and illegally accessing private records. However, the judge dismissed the case earlier this month after ruling the claimants failed to prove their allegations of unlawful information gathering.

Lawyers representing the claimants warned that their £16.2 million insurance coverage falls drastically short if ordered to pay on a strict indemnity basis, leaving them liable for millions. Meanwhile, Prince Harry slammed the court’s judgment, calling the ruling an unwarranted and complete whitewash.
