Orange: French authorities have detained a couple after the remains of five infants were discovered inside their home in the southeastern town of Orange, prompting a criminal investigation.
The remains were found on Monday after a 32 year old woman gave birth to a healthy baby boy at home before being taken to hospital.
According to prosecutors, the woman's partner became suspicious after realising she had been pregnant and searched their home, where he found what appeared to be human remains stored in boxes. Hospital staff alerted the authorities after he reported the discovery.
A forensic examination indicated that the remains are believed to belong to five newborn infants. Investigators have ordered further autopsies to determine the circumstances and causes of death.
The couple, both aged 32, were taken into custody as part of the investigation. Officials have not yet announced any charges.
The couple's two other children, aged eight and nine, have been placed in the care of relatives, while the newborn baby has been taken into the care of social services as the investigation continues.
